Birth Class #3

Well gang, I'm pulling a switcheroo on you today by posting our birth class blog post before our 28 week blog post this week. This is for entirely practical reasons. You see, my black shirt that I wear for every belly picture is dirty and I really want to wear it for every picture so you can see how much bigger Emma is getting week to week. So, you can look forward to that post tomorrow :)

Birth class this week was great. We learned so much. The topic was pregnancy. You would think we'd know a bit about pregnancy by now given we are 28 weeks along, but we learned a lot of new and cool things that we didn't know before.

During one of our activities tonight, Tyler had to answer some questions about what he might do in stressful labor situations. For example, "What will you do if your partner is in active labor and she needs your full attention, but you need to go to the bathroom?" Tyler's response? "Hold it or wear a diaper until active labor is over." My response to his response? "Whaaaat??" Of course, he was totally kidding (some of the questions were kind of silly). But we did laugh when we found out he was not the only guy to write that response.

We also watched another birth video. This particular birth was a water birth and you should have seen the way the new Mom and Dad reacted when their son was born. They were crying and she must have told that baby thirty times that she loved him. There was hardly a dry eye in the room.

And for those of you who love knowing the snacks of the week, today's food was eggs. The couple in charge made deviled eggs and quiche. Let's just say our spinach salad had better be good given what's been made over the past few weeks.

Here are some interesting things we learned at class:
1. The average pregnancy lasts 41 weeks and 1 day.
2. If your water breaks early in labor it is often a sign that labor will be long and difficult.
3. It is generally not a great idea to take medication during pregnancy, even for a cold or a headache. If Mom weighs 140 pounds and Baby weighs 7 pounds, Baby will receive twenty times the effect of a drug that Mom receives.
